Truckee River Fly Fishing (need help)?

I live about an hour from the Truckee River now and I want to start fly fishing it but I am not sure where to go. I live on the Nevada side of the river. Any suggestions on a good area to fish and what to use this time of year?

Macarren bridge! It’s a great spot for browns.

Like the other answerer mentioned, colder water more fish. I was up in Tahoe three weeks ago on vacation, and managed to fish one morning while the family was still sleeping – I hit the stretch along 89. It was tough – low water, mild temps – most fish are holding lower in the system, away from the lake.

Fish riffles, back eddies and heads/tails of large pools.

For you, I would stick to the stretch basically between Mogul to Hafed. It’s deeper, better water. I know it’s in Reno/Sparks, but it really is the better water. More fish, better conditions.

Just a side note, there is a section(s) of the river that is PRIVATELY owned, and if you’re not drifting it on a float tube/kayak etc, and you’re on the bank, you can be ticketed/fined. It’s owned by a “prestigious” (JERKS) fly fishing organization. I don’t remember the area, but it’s there….be aware.

Thanks for clarifying the closed section; however, I am under the informed understanding that the section is actually able to be fished, but you are only allowed to do so NOT from the bank. You are not even allowed to beach your craft in that area. You can, however, float/raft/kayak your way through, fishing the entire time. But like I said, you just can’t stop on the side….not even for a minute.
